Kraków is the second largest and one of the oldest cities in Poland. Situated on the Vistula River. Kraków has traditionally been one of the leading centres of Polish academic, cultural, and artistic life and is one of Poland's most important economic hubs. 

The city has many historical monuments, its center is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. One of the major scientific, cultural and economic centers in Poland, a popular tourist spot.

During the closing Mass of the 2013 World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro, Pope Francis announced that Kraków would host the next World Youth Day in 2016.
